The End of the Emailed Newsletter

Remember when newsletters were the way to stay in the loop? Whether it was your favorite brand, a community update, or even a personal project, newsletters were everywhere. But let’s be honest—when was the last time you got genuinely excited about opening one?

Yeah, us too. On a wet day over Christmas I cleared out over 1000 unread emails. Not one of those was about client work - all were newsletters and some from January 2024! We get them usually because we have to supply our email address to access ANYTHING these days. That’s why we’ve moved on. Here’s a breakdown of why newsletters just don’t fit into our world anymore. And what will replace them.

1. Who Has Time for Another Email?

Inbox overload is real. Between work emails, personal emails, and the ones you forgot to unsubscribe from (hello, random promo codes), newsletters are just another thing competing for attention. Most of them end up unread, skimmed, or—let’s face it—deleted.

2. People Want Bite-Sized Content

We live in the age of quick-scroll content. People want to consume updates in seconds, not minutes. Social media gives us instant, digestible info. Newsletters? They’re often too long and just don’t match the way we like to consume content now.

3. Email Feels... Outdated

Let’s be real: email isn’t the star of communication anymore. Between Slack, WhatsApp, and social media DMs, a lot of business owners check emails when we have to. And even when we do, newsletters often feel like background noise instead of something exciting. We feel that we weren't reaching our clients as much as we wanted to, so we are going where you are going.

4. Everyone Wants Personalisation

Today’s audiences want content tailored just for them—think Netflix recommendations or personalised Spotify playlists. A one-size-fits-all newsletter feels a bit… meh. Often in my emails about your GST etc I am including information that's personal to you and your business. It's relevant, not white noise.

5. Social Media Stole the Spotlight

Why wait for a weekly or monthly newsletter when you can get updates in real-time? Social media lets brands and creators share announcements, stories, and conversations instantly. It’s where the audience already is—and it’s way more interactive. Including accountants!

7. It’s Just Too Much Work

Creating a newsletter takes time—brainstorming content, designing it, writing copy, and scheduling it. And then what? It ends up in spam or buried in inboxes. Social media allows us to instantly put out an update and leave it there available to you when you choose to look at it.

So, What’s the Plan?

Just because newsletters are out doesn’t mean communication is. We’re simply meeting people where they are—on platforms they already use, with content that feels fresh and engaging. What I did was unsubscribe from emails (it's a work in progress) but bookmark the websites of those that had information that am wanting to stay on top of. The plan for 2025 and beyond is to schedule time each week/month to cycle through those websites/social media accounts, and see what's happening.

2024 we introduced sending a video with your annual accounts. Feedback on this was overwhelming, and all positive. 2025 we will ramp that up, maybe include them with your GST returns where appropriate. Anytime we have information to share thats relevant to you and your business, we'll do a quick video and send that through. So much easier to listen to than reading an email.

We will aim for weekly blog updates.

Here's to taking back some control of emails in 2025!
